Wreath Hanging & Care Guide

How to Hang Your Wreath Without Damaging Your Door

Getting your wreath up beautifully—without scratching or denting your door—is easier than you think. Here are the most door-friendly methods:

  • Over-the-door wreath hanger: The easiest option. A padded or plastic-coated metal hook slips over the top of the door and holds wreaths up to about 5–8 lbs. No hardware, no damage.
  • Ribbon or fishing line: Loop a wide ribbon or clear fishing line through the wreath and hang it from a door knocker, a small nail, or a suction-cup hook on a glass storm door. Ribbon adds a decorative touch and spreads the weight gently.
  • Suction-cup wreath hook: Ideal for glass storm or front doors. Rate the weight limit before use—most hold 5–10 lbs.
  • Command strips (outdoor-rated): Use a large Command outdoor hook rated for the wreath weight. Follow the manufacturer's removal instructions carefully to avoid paint lifting.
  • Small nail or screw: If you don't mind a tiny hole, a single small nail or screw into the door frame or door molding is very secure and barely visible.

Tip: Always check your wreath's approximate weight before choosing a hanger. Our wreaths are listed with dimensions on each product page—most standard 24" grapevine or mesh wreaths weigh 1–3 lbs.

Indoor vs. Outdoor Use

All of our wreaths can be used indoors. For outdoor display, keep these guidelines in mind:

  • Covered porch or entryway (shaded): Most wreaths hold up well here. Keep them out of direct rain and standing water.
  • Direct sun and weather: Prolonged direct sunlight will fade mesh ribbons and floral picks over time. UV-protective floral spray (available at craft stores) can extend color life.
  • Rain and humidity: Grapevine bases can soften and warp with repeated soaking. If rain is expected, bring the wreath inside or store it temporarily.
  • Wind: Secure your wreath hanger well. Large wreaths can catch wind like a sail—use a heavier-duty hook or add a second anchor point with ribbon.

Caring for Your Wreath

Grapevine Wreaths

Grapevine is a natural material that, when properly cared for, can last many seasons:

  • Keep dry when possible. Occasional light moisture is fine; prolonged dampness is not.
  • Dust with a soft brush or a low-pressure can of compressed air between seasons.
  • Re-hot-glue any loose embellishments as needed—craft glue works well for minor repairs.

Mesh & Ribbon Wreaths

  • Fluff the mesh loops and ribbon tails each time you hang the wreath to restore fullness.
  • Spot-clean with a barely damp cloth if needed; avoid soaking the mesh.
  • Mesh holds its shape best when stored flat or hung (not squished in a box).

Longevity

A well-made grapevine wreath stored and displayed with care can last 3–5 seasons or more. Mesh and ribbon wreaths typically last 2–4 seasons depending on sun and weather exposure. Bringing wreaths indoors off-season is the single best thing you can do to extend their life.

Seasonal Storage

Proper storage keeps your wreath looking fresh year after year:

  • Use a wreath storage bag or box: These protect the shape and keep dust off. Plastic wreath bags with a zipper closure are widely available and inexpensive.
  • Hang it if you can: Hanging storage (on a hook in a closet or on a pegboard in a garage) prevents crushing and keeps embellishments intact.
  • Avoid attics in extreme heat: High summer temperatures can melt hot-glue bonds. A climate-controlled space is ideal.
  • Label your storage: A quick tag or photo on your phone makes it easy to find the right wreath next season.

Choosing the Right Wreath Size for Your Space

A wreath that is too small gets lost; one that is too large can overwhelm a door or wall. Use this quick guide:

  • Standard exterior door (32"–36" wide): A 22"–26" wreath is ideal.
  • Double doors or large entryways: Go 28"–36" for visual impact.
  • Interior doors (28"–30" wide): An 18"–22" wreath looks proportionate.
  • Narrow windows or small walls: A 12"–16" wreath works beautifully without overwhelming the space.
